July Naturalista Feature!

M I S S    L Y N N  D O U G L A S

Introduce yourself!

My name is Lynn Douglas and I am 25 years old. I am from Greensboro, NC and a proud graduate of THE GREAT James B. Dudley Senior High School. I went on to attend North Carolina Central University and received my BA in Psychology in May of 2010. I am currently pursuing a masters degree in School Counseling from NCCU and set to graduate in May of 2014. I love anything that involved shopping, hair, nails, pageantry, and fashion lol.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?

During my first year of grad school I started noticing that my hair was breaking off in the front, seemingly by the day. I was freaking out and got really depressed because I always had healthy hair. It got to a point where I could no longer camouflage the breakage so I got a sew in. That did wonders for my confidence and for my hair. After I took it out I saw how pretty my hair was at the root and so I decided to go for it and start transitioning.

When & how did you transition to your natural hair?

I started transitioning in May of 2012. I mostly did sew-ins (long hair don't care lol), and then a combination of flexi-rod sets, bantu knots, and braids.

In what ways (if any) has returning to natural affected you?

As I am a new natural I can admit that sometimes it can be taxing on my emotions, both good and bad. I always hid behind my hair and now that I can't so its given me the confidence to like my face. I can say that I never plan to turn back though...I wouldn't change a thing!

How would you describe your hair?

Mostly, it's tightly coiled all over except around my edges and this one section on my left side from where I was straightening my leave-out while transitioning with sew-ins -_-. I don't officially know my hair type.

What is your regimen?

I'm still trying to figure that out lol. Right now I wash and condition my hair with Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo and Restorative Conditioner every two weeks, deep condition with Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Mask and cowash with As I Am Coconut Cowash Cleansing Conditioner in between. I use a mixture of Shea Moisture Leave-In Conditioner and raw shea butter after washing and cowashing and everyday for that matter. I only do twist outs right now and I go back and forth between Eco Styler Olive Oil Gel and Cantu for Naturals Curling Cream. I use unrefined coconut oil to seal my ends. I've tried a few organic things like adding an egg into my treatment mask, an avocado, honey, and olive oil deep conditioning smoothie, DIY flax seed gel, and olive oil and honey hot oil treatments but the jury is still out on those lol.

How do you retain length & moisture in your hair?

As of late I've been refreshing my hair in the morning with a mixture of aloe vera juice and tea tree oil and THAT has done WONDERS for retaining moisture but length...that I'm still trying to obtain lol. First day twist outs give me length but after that I have MAJOR shrinkage lol.

What mistakes have you made with your hair that you've learned from?

Straightening while I was transitioning smh... I really regret that because I can't do a lot of natural styles now because my hair is still straight in those places. Also, doubling brand new elastic head bands! I have a circular dent in my scalp from doing that when I first did my BC and it pulled my hair way too tight.

What is the best/most effective thing you do for your hair?

Detangling is EVERYTHING for my hair as I feel that it prefers being tangled lol. Instead of using a shower comb I detangle with either Eco Styler or Curling Cream and a denman brush. That brush is a gift from above lol. Not only does it cut down on my detangling time and pain level (I've gotten tender-headed since I BCed) but it defines my curls so nicely! I've only done 1 wash n go but I used my brush to separate my curls and it was great!

Is there a blog/web page where we can find you?
